Divots for Devereux Golf Classic raises funds for local charity

Divots for Devereux Golf Classic raised more than $70,000 for children in need during its 11th annual tournament held at the Sweetwater Country Club on Monday, Oct. 15.

According to a press release, twenty-four teams participated in the event, which featured a full day of golf, lunch and dinner, prizes and a raffle for three days of play at Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

The event, sponsored by Lexus of Clear Lake and O'Rourke Petroleum and Shell Oil Co., also consisted of a live and silent auction, featuring items such as fully paid trips to Las Vegas, a privately chartered plane trip and a weekend stay in Biloxi, Miss.

The first place winners of the Championship Division, which included Brian Burr, Shawn Goheen, Roque Baecker and Howard Hill, were presented with the V-Cup trophy, named after Dr. Carolyn Villarrubia, the executive medical director for Devereux Texas.

The first place winners of the Fun Division were Tony Garcia, Carey Schmaltz, Shane Poston and Justin Jones.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Devereux Texas School and Scholarship Program, which supports young children in need.

"This tournament represents eleven years of support that we continue to receive from all our donors," said Pamela Helm, executive director for Devereux Texas, in the release. "None of this would be possible without them, and we hope all of our sponsors know how much this means for the children at Devereux. Thank you to everyone who made it out to show their support!"
