Study Dorm can help you do the math
In 2009, after graduating from the State University of New York with an master’s in electrical engineering, Shahin Nangi moved to Houston and started an internship at an information technology company. Even though she achieved what she set out to do, Nangi felt that something was missing -- namely, that feeling she got when one of her tutoring students excelled in an exam. In 2012, along with her husband Asif, she started Study Dorm, a math tutoring business.
ADDRESS: 3 Sugar Creek Center, Suite 100, Sugar Land
HOURS: 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday
WHAT YOU’LL FIND: Study Dorm has four math tutors, all of whom have master’s degrees in math or engineering and at least five years’ teaching experience, specifically in mathematics. It offers prep for a variety of exams, including SATs, GREs, GMATs and the GED. Students can meet a tutor at its Sugar Land site, a library or cafe, or online.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: “I believe that there is no such thing as a student who is bad in math, even when a student is weak in that subject. We think it’s all about practice and learning about the concepts. Maybe that student missed something in fourth grade or sixth grade.” — Shahin Nangi, owner
