Brazos Bend plans creepy crawly weekend

Brazos Bend State Parks will celebrate Halloween weekend with “Hairy, Scary, Slimy, Slithering Species” programs beginning Friday, Oct. 26. Park staff will use these programs to introduce the public to a variety of creatures that have historically been feared and misunderstood.

“Most of these fears are unfounded and based mostly on misinformation or the lack thereof,” said Park Ranger Sharon Hanzik in a Brazos Bend State Park news release, “These programs are designed to help correct myth and misconception and demonstrate that although some species may be dangerous, they are also beneficial to their ecosystems.”

Activities include hikes, story times and demonstrations that feature owls, snakes, bats, alligators, pond life, toads and spiders. A screening of the Halloween classic “Ladykillers” is also scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at the park’s outdoor amphitheater.

The programs are free with park admission. Admission to the park costs $7 per person. Children 12 and younger enter the park free of charge. Programs take place 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 26-28. Brazos Bend State Park is a 5,000-acre island of natural diversity located southwest of Houston.

It is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to conserve natural and cultural resources, provide recreational and educational opportunities, and foster an understanding of the diversity of Texas’ lands and heritage for all generations.
