Sugar Land Girl Scout Alexis Johnson earned the Girl Scouts of the USA's Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive, for teaching children ages 3 through 8 the importance and benefits of eating a balanced diet and making healthily food choices.
According to a press release, the award recognizes individuals that demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, career planning, community involvement and personal development. To qualify for the award, recipients must perform more than 100 service hours and two to three years of intensive work, including planning and completing a project that is a service to the community.
Johnson's project involved leading a team of volunteers to plan and host a workshop devoted to teaching children health eating habits. She prepared several healthy foods for the students to sample and taught children how to make smart food choices when eating at restaurants.
"I chose this project because [Houston] was an area that received lots of critical reviews about childhood obesity in the media," Johnson said in the release. "I learned how to build teams, how to conduct work assignments and how to share information that creates enthusiasm about the subject."
Johnson, a 2012 graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School, has been a member of Girl Scouts for four years.
