The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County will host “Once Upon a Story,” a free interactive reading workshop for children age 5 to 10 years old, on Friday, June 17.

During the workshop, children will be acting out different books, listening to their favorite stories, creating bookmarks and enjoying a snack. The activities promote the enjoyment and excitement that one receives from reading a book.

The workshop is Clements High School senior Kristen Pownell’s project to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award.

“I love reading and wanted to enhance other children’s love of reading through my Gold Award project,” said Pownell. “I hope that the children attending the workshop will enjoy the books and leave with a desire to read more.”

At the workshop, Pownell will send every child home with a new book. She has already collected 300 books through the book drive that she organized. For the parents, she has prepared a short information session with a list of recommended books for specific ages and reading levels, as well as tips to excite children about reading.

The workshop will be available at two different times on June 17. The morning session will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The afternoon session will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

To register, email once.upon.a.story.workshop@gmail.com.

The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is located at 12530 Emily Court in Sugar Land.
