Pretty in Pink event raises money for Methodist Sugar Land cancer fund
published Oct. 29, 2012
The Pretty in Pink fundraising event recently raised more than $100,000 for Methodist Sugar Land's cancer fund.
"I am honored to be a part of this important event," Dr. Sandra Templeton, a breast surgeon, said in a press release. "It was a great way to give back to the community and help bring awareness to the difficulties that so many patients face as they battle cancer. I especially like the fact that all money donated will stay at our hospital and relieve some of my patient's financial burdens."
Templeton joined Dr. Kelly Dempsey, another breast surgeon, as presenting sponsors at the event.
"As a breast surgeon I see the financial toll a cancer diagnosis can take on my patients," Dempsey said in the release. "Raising money for the MSLH cancer fund gives me the opportunity to help my patients on a different level. It was amazing to see the community come out and support the event. It was a great turnout, which helped us raise more money for the cancer fund."
"We wanted to create a fund where our patients could directly benefit from our efforts," Leena Taneja, sponsorship chair and director of physician relations at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, said in the release. "Cancer patients often incur extra costs related to their condition and, in many cases, they can't work for extended periods of time. While the fund cannot pay Methodist directly for medical bills, it can help pay for other non-hospital-related costs such as medical equipment, medications, dentistry, car payments, house payments and wigs. Our hope is to make the fight against cancer a bit less financially stressful for our patients."
