Velasquez Elementary named National Blue Ribbon School
published Sep. 11, 2012
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has named Velasquez Elementary School a National Blue Ribbon School, according to a press release from the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District.
School officials were informed of the award Sept. 7, according to the release. The Education Department recognized 269 schools from across the country with the award.
The National Blue Ribbon School award identifies elementary, middle and high schools where students demonstrated significant levels of achievement, according to the release. Nearly 7,000 schools have received the award during its 30-year history.
Velasquez Elementary principal Heater Patterson said the recognition is a testament to the hard work the students and staff put in every day.
"I am so proud of everyone in the Velasquez Wildcat family," Patterson said in the release. "That includes every student, parent, teacher and staff member. We have always stressed that they can be the best and this is the proof."
The Education Department will honor all of this year's awardees at a recognition ceremony Nov. 12-13 in Washington, D.C.
