Bobcat a welcome guest at Richmond golf course
published Jun. 28, 2011 - Story by Scott Gordon
Golfers at Fort Bend Country Club this summer might encounter a bobcat and three kittens who've moved into a tree along the golf course.
Peter Yannone, a contractor who works for the club, says the bobcat has been guarding her kittens in the tree since at least last Friday. Since the course sits near the Brazos River, he says, the club's staff is used to encountering wildlife, including the occasional feral pig.
"The bobcat's actually a welcome guest, because she's probably helping out with the squirrel population, which was a little thick this year," Yannone says.
He went to take a look at the cat on Friday. "The mama cat never took her eyes off us once, but the kittens were hiding in the forks of the tree and they would constantly move to stay hidden," he says.
Yannone estimates that the mother bobcat is about 22 inches long. He caught sight of one of the kittens, and says it was about a foot long.
"Most of our golfers feel fortunate that we have such wildlife," he says. "They tend to make the game more interesting."
