CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT
Four candidates have lined up to run for retiring Missouri City Councilman Buddy Jimerson’s at-large position 2 seat on the City Council, in a race that asks the question: How is the city doing?
Developer Danny Nguyen, 43, who has the endorsement of the sitting mayor and three council members, said Missouri City is doing well but could do better.
The Lake Olympia resident said he wants to use his entrepreneurial skills and small-business experience to attract new business and lighten the tax burden on homeowners.
Kevin Tunstall, 45, who has run unsuccessfully for City Council twice before, said Missouri City is in “dire financial straits.”
A health care administrator who lives in Quail Valley, Tunstall is running on a platform that includes no tax increases, term limits, a homestead exemption and more attention for Missouri City’s neglected core neighborhoods.
Yolanda Ford, 36, who works for Missouri City as a planner, said her knowledge of the city would be an asset in challenging economic times. While Ford said she would not support a tax increase, she said the city staff has already been reduced to “essential personnel” and she would not support further cuts.
And insurance executive Judith Dupre, 64, who said she’s running her race without donations or a campaign budget, wants to provide tax relief, help young families and seniors and be “responsive to the community.”
Nguyen
NguyenJimerson — who has joined Mayor Allen Owen, Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Wyatt and Councilman Bobby Marshall in endorsing Nguyen — is retiring after 12 years on the council. His successor will be chosen May 8.
Nguyen said other candidates promise to reduce taxes without explaining how this will affect city services and amenities.
“Instead of cutting taxes, I will be focusing on attracting more revenues … without sacrificing the quality of services. By accomplishing that, we will increase the tax base and will shift some of (the burden) to business owners, rather than homeowners.”
Nguyen said the race boils down to qualifications, a positive attitude and readiness to serve. He said his priorities are public safety, economic development and quality of life.
“People should focus on the qualifications of who can take this city to the next level,” he said. “I believe in the city and am enthusiastic about it.”
Tunstall
TunstallTunstall said the city is not spending its money wisely. For example, he said the city paid an “inflated” price for property for its planned surface water treatment plant near Sienna Plantation, while allowing infrastructure to fail in other areas, such as sidewalks in First Colony.
Police are overworked, with low morale, he said.
Tunstall said he’s not a “naysayer” — except when it comes to new taxes.
“I want a nice, clean, attractive city and a place I feel is safe to raise my family. I want that city to have the amenities to keep my tax dollars within the confines of that city,” he said.
“It’s just a fundamental belief that we can all do better than what we’re currently doing.”
Ford
FordFord, who has served on her Colony Crossing homeowner board, would be required to resign her city job if elected.
She said her city experience, plus 10 years as a business owner and consultant, gives her insight into the challenges faced by residents and business owners, and will allow her to step into the at-large position 2 job “with ease,” she said.
Public safety, economic development and holding the line on taxes are Ford’s top concerns.
“My first priority is to not vote on another tax increase, to provide transparency on city expenditures and activities and to re-evaluate how the city currently operates to determine if those operations are efficient and appropriate during this current economy.
“I will protect property values, revitalize blight areas and support responsible, sustainable growth that will enrich residents’ lives.”
Dupre
DupreDupre, who has past experience on a Fort Bend utility district board, describes herself as the “underdog” in the race. “I’m doing this because I’m community- and civic-minded,” she said.
“I am responsive and will be the CHANGE for which everyone is looking,” said Dupre.
The First Colony resident said she wants to help young families in Missouri City.
“Increasing taxes over the last four years is not the way to do it. I’d like to …help the community and keep these tax increases from hindering our constituents even more.”
As to city finances, Dupre said she doesn’t know the details — yet.
“I just want to get in there and find out,” she said. “I need to get more involved to determine how we can serve our community.”

False claims and more for Nguyen!
I think Danny is the weak link in these campaigns. He is totally backed by special interest and has numerous county tax liens against his development business. He has made numerous false claims on his campaign literature too.

Public Forum Report--COUNTY & FEDERAL TAX LIENS?
Here is a good release that came out last week
MC Candidates Forum Contentious At Times…
The Missouri City candidates forum went off without a hitch Wednesday night, at least for the first few minutes of meet and greet. The event was sponsored by a coalition of concerned citizens of Fort Bend and a students group. Once the introductions had concluded the gloves were off. One candidate was conspicuously absent from the event. A fairly large group of protestors showed up from a coalition of Asian-Americans protesting Danny Nguyen’s candidacy for numerous reasons. Two of the incumbents in attendance, Allen Owen and Jerry Wyatt, who have openly endorsed and supported Mr. Nguyen’s campaign were criticized by members of the group and some in the general audience for their continued pushing of a “slate of candidates” that include developer Nguyen.
During the Q&A session one audience member asked before the packed house if Jerry Wyatt or Allen Owen were aware of Mr. Nguyens business and tax liens from multiple entities including a federal lien. Mayor Owen did not respond and Wyatt claimed to have no knowledge of such problems with Mr. Nguyen. Following another query from audience members, all the candidates in attendance, with the exception of the mayor and Mr. Wyatt, agreed that taking campaign financing from companies doing business with the city and then voting on those projects was something they would not do. Mr. Wyatt made the usual “politicians denial” that he had always followed the law with regard to campaign finance but he would not condemn the practice often called “political cronyism”…
We will update this release at intervals.

Is he really claiming to be a member of the American Legion?
Is he really claiming to be a member of the American Legion? That is pretty low.
Why would Mr. Nguyen put the American Legion on his campaign
Why would Mr. Nguyen put the American Legion on his campaign even when it is obvious from that letter that he is not currently a member of the legion and not even eligible for membership. Was it an attempt to win the vet vote?
There is nothing lower than fooling those that have served our country just to gain their vote. It makes me wonder about so many of the other claims he has made in his campaign.
Did you all catch those tax liens against his development
Did you all catch those tax liens against his development company and I heard he has projects in the pipeline that need city council approval. Could this be why he is running for a seat?
Tax Liens
Of course this is why N is running, and Rep. V is the same. They buy land..and let it look like a junk yard...and dont want any Assoc. to say anything..then suck up tax payer $$...

Gary Sets Record For Absences From Council Meeting

Actually it isn't the record, even though she has missed due to health issues (or did you miss that too) a council republican and Owenite has the record. Mr. Kolaja and if the city hadn't changed the records you would see Owen with quite a few more misses himself.
I call the PR dept. at MC the "fiddlers" for messing with so much data (like the crime reports).....
Here's another developer PAC that gives to Danny/Owen

Dem WebSite Report On Gary's Absences

One of Juanita’s favorite words is absquatulated. She thinks her grandmother invented that word. It means: gone, as in ‘he absquatulated with all the money from the cookie sale.’
It can also mean turned up missing, as in ‘Missouri City Mayoral candidate Cynthia Lenton Gary absquatulated more than any other council person in the past three years.’
While councilperson Brett Kolaja missed one more meeting than Lenton-Gary did, he’s been serving a year longer, so she holds the record for her term of office.
“I did not see that information on her campaign literature,” Juanita confesses. “And while absquatulating might not be something to be proud of, holding a record does allow bragging rights. You’d think she’d want the citizens to know that she can do her job without showing up half the time. That’s pretty darn amazing.”
Here’s her record of missing meetings:
“You can’t miss that many meetings by accident,” Juanita says, “That kind of missing takes work.”
“So, tomorrow start a new program at work. Only show up every other day and then ask for a promotion,” Juanita suggests.
“The Lenton-Gary part time public service award will be handed out on election night,” she grins.
Defending Democrats Again Wade?
The developer network will back any party and buy any loyalty as is evidenced here by wadefishin who claims to be a "conservative" but constantly attacks true conservatives who vote against tax increases. He then spreads lies about votes and other misinformation prepared by the city for Mr. Owen, the mayor.
What's wrong wade, you can't get any republicans or real conservatives to speak up for your RINO? Only democrats who take the developer monies to control our tax dollars for their projects?
What a joke you have become!
Why I Find Libs Amusing
"LINCOLN lost all of his elections except the last one. You asked."
PatriotMissive
no pms no one asked you, but here's some Lincoln facts:
1834 Ran for state legislature again - won.
1846 Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
and Tunstall ain't no Lincoln.
Looks like our resident "liberal" owen toadie is back lying
Looks like our resident "liberal" owen toadie is back lying again for Allen's developer crowd. I wonder how much he gets paid for this crap?
Bev Carter Tells It Like It Is
"I can’t imagine the city coming through the economic crisis it has just experienced with someone other than Owen at the helm. He’s always right there. In the past few years, he has missed two council meetings--once in 2006 and once in 2007. It’s not much fun being Allen Owen’s mayor pro tem.
And while I hate to say anything about a woman in politics since I encourage more of my sisters to throw their hats into the ring, Owen’s opponent, a lady named Cynthia Lenton-Gary has missed 13 meetings so far in her council term. She is only bested by one other council member, who shall be nameless until he is up for election.
And the one night Missouri City had a workshop to unveil the plans and awarding $1,000,000 for the beautification of Texas Parkway (Lenton-Gary’s District where she says the city never does anything), she skips the council meeting to attend a meeting of local pastors so she could campaign for her election.
I’ve heard through the grapevine that Lenton-Gary wants to get off the city council, which she had to do to run for mayor. Losing as mayor is a good way to get off. I’m just saying.....
Elsewhere in Missouri City, you can’t imagine the attacks against one of the candidates running for the open seat, a nice young Vietnamese American named Danny Nguyen (pronounced Win). I don’t understand why the other candidates can’t spend their time and money telling everyone their attributes and future plans for the city."
Good point Bev maybe Tunstall the liberal from Calif has no attributes.
carter is an Allen Owen flunkie and nothing more. Just like you
carter is an Allen Owen flunkie and nothing more. Just like you are wade. Defending the vendor feeders is not "conservative". It is corporate welfare and why our property taxes keep going up. The "RINOs" have to go and that means Owen-Wyatt-Nguyen.
You must of missed the last news piece exposing your developer machine bunch but don't worry, we are getting it out to the homeowners directly...

Owen-Wyatt have voted for 3 out of 3 of the last property rate
Owen-Wyatt have voted for 3 out of 3 of the last property rate tax increases and have voted in record bond debt. Who are the "liberals"?
Funny so many Houston democrats that do not live in the city are backing Owen-Nguyen (Nguyen who is a developer with projects waiting for city action on TX Pkwy).

FORD THREATENED BY CITY OFFICIALS?
on 05-01-2010 at 09:11 am.
Last week we were told by Ms. Ford, another position 2 candidate, that she was threatened by city officials when she announced her candidacy for the position 2 seat that the mayor had promised to Mr. Nguyen.
Apparently they were upset and told her that if she ran, regardless of the outcome, she would not have her job with the city after the after the election.
How do I know this, because she told me and will tell anyone that contacts her the truth on this, which I commend her for! Another brave soul standing up to the political machine that controls the area.
Way to go Ford, Tunstall & Dupre! Stand up for what is right and keep getting the TRUTH out about the cronies!
These council and school board seats are owned by the people/homeowners/taxpayers and not the special interest who sheeple lead through deception and lies!”
–Saw this on another area blog and thought you all might want to see it.
