Man lying in street struck, killed by car

A man was killed Monday night and a Good Samaritan seriously injured when they were struck by a car in Richmond.

The incident happened about 7 p.m. in the 1400 block of Preston Street at the intersection of Collins Road.

Police Sgt. Lowell Neinast said the men, both Richmond residents, were transported by ambulance to OakBend Medical Center.

Valentine Uvalle, 61, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital and Juan Hernandez, 54, was listed in stable condition Monday night.

Neinast said Uvalle had been "lying in the middle of Preston Street" when Hernandez saw him and attempted to help him up. The driver of a westbound vehicle did not see the two men.

"At this time the incident appears to be an unfortunate accident and no charges are pending on the driver," said Neinast. "The case will remain under investigation awaiting autopsy results."

    Great to read BJ again

I sure miss BJ in the Fort Bend Herald.

It looks like the Fort Bend Herald's loss is the Chronicle's gain.

Great to be reading her again.
