Wonder what kids will be when they grow up?

I have three girls. Every day, in some form, I wonder what they are going to be when they grow up.

So many events roll together to produce the individual they will finally become. They are each different.

The first is a total priss and avoids nature as if it is all out to get her except the five-pound male dog she is convinced loves the outfits she puts on him along with the crystal-studded collars.

The second loves nature and once cried I “killed her best friend” when she was three because she walked up to me holding a foreign spider and I did what all good mothers would - slapped it off her hand and did the Never-Ending-Mexican Hat Dance on it.

The third is in the challenging phase of transitioning between child, teenager and young lady. To that end, some days she is just like my first child and some days she does her own thing. This morning she was in a mood do to her own thing.

She was sitting on the couch with a friend that she has known since they were probably two years old. They had a sleepover last night and had just come down at 10 a.m., which is actually way too early for a child their age and I may have to check them for fever later. Anyway, out of nowhere, they started talking about school and the eyeballs that they had to dissect. The conversation went something like this:

    “We got to dissect eyeballs!”

“Really? We did too. Sheep eyeballs are weird.”

“Oh, we didn’t do sheep eyeballs, we did cow eyeballs. Everything else we did was sheep; sheep brains, and sheep heart.”

“Oh man, you guys are really lucky. All we did was sheep eyeballs and a worm.”

“Yea and you should have been there when we did the heart it was so disgusting. The first time we cut into that thing I was like (at this point she made a throw up sound I can’t begin to spell).”

“Oh and did you see the rainbow part in your eye?”

“Yea, it was inside if you pulled the black stuff out and flipped it over it was all ‘rainbowy’.”

At that point, I got pretty excited because I thought maybe she’s going to grow up to be a doctor. After all, she sounded like she actually was interested in this part of science. Then I thought a little longer and realized that maybe I had just caught her in a moment of being a fourteen-year old who wanted to be grossed out with her friend and in her own weird way was trying to say she liked rainbows.

Oh well, a mom can dream.

P.S. Try out Bullrito’s, our whole family loved it. If you want to laugh until you cry go see Diary of a Wimpy Kid-it’s safe for all to see in content and really cute.
