HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Adding heat to the white-hot House District 27 Democratic primary race, Ron Reynolds, opponent of incumbent Rep. Dora Olivo, on Sunday accused her of having “deceived voters” in a campaign ad that claims endorsement from her Democratic House colleague Sylvester Turner.
“In fact, Rep. Turner has elected not to endorse in this race. His likeness and a quote are being used in Olivo's campaign advertisement without permission,” said a press release from Reynold’s campaign.
When reached on the phone Sunday evening, Reynolds again expressed indignity at Olivo’s campaign.
The Olivo campaign ad, which was attached in an e-mail that ended up in my inbox, carries a long roster of supporters, with Turner topping the list.
TurnerIn the ad, there is a quote attributed to Turner along with a photo of him.
The quote reads: “Rep. Dora Olivo has been an ally and friend in my fight for humane treatment of the elderly — ensuring utility companies can’t cut off their electricity in the heat of the summer. And she’s reached out into the community to provide support to grandparents raising grandchildren, provide assistance to small businesses, and to enroll more children in the Children’s Health Insurance program.”
I left messages for Olivo today. She called back and here's what she had to say:
“Sylvester did endorse me and let me use his name. And I will continue to do so,” Olivo said, citing her supporters including more than 40 state and local elected officials and organizations.
As to the quote, Olivo said her campaign staff got it confused with a statement by another supporter and it was not an intentional mistake.
“It was a mix-up,” she said.
I decided to do some fact-checking Sunday evening and called Turner.
Turner said at the end of the last Legislative session in May, he was approached by Olivo for his support for her re-election.
“I gave her permission to use my name, but I haven’t been involved since then,” said Turner, adding that he didn’t know she would face a challenger.
Turner said he did not make the remark quoted in Olivo’s campaign ad.
Turner described the statements from both the incumbent’s and opponent’s camps as last-minute campaign efforts to pull more weight to their credibility.
“But I really don’t want this to become an issue in these final 48 hours,” he said. “Let them battle it out and let the voter decide who to support. I will work with either of them.”

“I gave her permission to use my name... (said Turner)"
Sounds like the activist Reynolds is making much ado about nothing. Rather desperate and last-minute if you ask me.
Now the Smelley story... that really is bad, he can leave Fort Bend and we'd all be better off I believe.
Yes and considering Reynolds is currently using names on his
Yes and considering Reynolds is currently using names on his site that are not confirmed and one is running for a commissioners court position he is sounding pretty desperate to me. He needs to ck his own endorsements first along with his TEC fines and TX Bar assoc. problems...

Looks like she did get permission and Reynolds is using this as a last minute slam. The numbers must be going against him in early voting which makes one wonder why and how he is getting access to those numbers. Several others in both parties seem to be getting this access level that other candidates don't to the early voting numbers. Someone needs to ask the elections administrator why!
Pot, Kettle--Black?
We must be hearing from the Reynolds campaign above in the "deeply rooted" post. Amazing that they mention nothing about the civil cases spun off by the multiple Texas Bar Association violations and that record TEC fine for multiple violations. I think honesty and integrity isn't something you should selectively cite. Too bad we are see Rovian tactics of "point the finger" from you people while you create the dirt. Mr. Turner already said he gave permission.
Why aren't you all addressing the names on Reynolds website that don't check out like Hunter and Carreon (candidate for commissioners court). No permission was given on those either. Is the pot calling the kettle black?
Like most endorsements that politicians give they are fleeting
Like most endorsements that politicians give they are fleeting and often part of deals. Looks like last minute spin to me from the desperate campaign that ignores all the facts about their own candidate Mr. Reynolds and those he has stepped on over the years in order to run for office and gain the "spoils".
I wish Ms. Olivo the best on Tuesday!!!
Did I forget to mention that the post above is mysteriously
Did I forget to mention that the post above is mysteriously close to release going out on the "D-club" site which has spent the last year attacking Dora and Elaine Bishop mercilessly. Yep, fortbender you seemed to have exposed this last ditch campaign act very well.
Dirty, Outlandish, Rude, & Asinine (D.O.R.A.) Politics
Wowwwwww! Politics wears an ugly face. Neither candidate has a spot free clean slate...but then again who of us posting comments has a spotless background?
What stands out MOST to me are Dora's claims to be for the people; however, she is negatively and erroneously attempting to bring down her opponent. Isn't it odd that Dora waited until days before voting to spread lies? In the midst of the lies her opponent has simply risen above and not chosen to retaliate in the same ridiculous manner. When can one person's integrity speak for himself?
I personally have heard Dora curse in a church, ignore me when I attempted to speak to her at an event, as well as tell a citizen to "move up'" when asked to speak louder or use a microphone. (check that one out on Youtube).
I know politics will continue to wear an ugly face, I just hope Dora will no longer be a part of it.
More misinformation....
Well kplowe, I never had concurrent sanctions from the Texas Bar Assoc and I was never nearly disbarred nor have I been fined by the Texas Ethics Commission at a record level for local politicians (I believe $10,500). I've also never been repeatedly sued by former clients, made out of court settlements and then failed to honor those settlements and then gotten sued again with subsequent appeals.
No kplowe these are not little insignificant issues and once again he is asking us to trust and VOTE for him. I WILL NOT vote for him or advise anyone else to do so. He is accusing Dora of false endorsements too and I know of at least two on his list that never gave permission before he ran those, so you see we are all not like Mr. Reynolds.
Happy campaigning!
New Kid on the Blog!
Just for everyone's FYI, I, too, am a new member! I have now been a proud member of this site for about 30 minutes or so!! Who-hoo! I look forward to my warm welcome.
Also, I hope all are cognizant of the tacky fact that Dora hired high school students to walk around spreading false accusations during early voting? How low to involve the youth of our community in such dirty tactics...not good role model or leader qualities.
Looks like you were right on target fortbender--great call
You know if they wanted to be involved they should have been participating all the way through the election season instead of just the day before and trying to drop their last bomb on Olivo.
It does make good entertainment though. I just wonder which "D-clubber" this one is and if he is a consultant or a family member of the "d-club" elite?

It is frightening to see democrats using Karl Rove tactics to manipulate voters against a real public servant, Dora Olivo. Dora has worked tirelessly with Texas Homeowners for HOA Reform for years in an effort to restore property-rights back to homeowners and restrict abuses of the vendor led HOA "Industry." Yes, Dora serves all of her "human constituents" over her "corporate peoplehood constituents." I guess Dora's policy scares Ron's developer friends!
Patriot Missive
LOL
I know Allen Owen, the developers best friend and backer in Missouri City, is a big Reynolds backer. Why would Ron need this support and why would he have dumped a fellow democrat to endorse a republican like Owen? Yep, politics sure is an interesting biz. Especially when one side likes to lie about the other in an attempt to diffuse the controversies surrounding their own candidate.
This is a pretty common ploy guys, you can do better. It's almost like playing the race card that you all tried yesterday. I'm just holding my breath waiting for your next effort.
Please find a better candidate next time.....LOL
THIS ONE ON RON WAS VERY INTERESTING--and read the last line--
TX HD 27: Olivo’s Opponent Anything But ‘Responsive, Reliable’
By Vince Leibowitz
Texas Elections
Most people are a little puzzled as to why anyone would want to get into a primary contest with State Rep. Dora Olivo (D-Missouri City). Olivo is a reliable vote for Democrats and no “Craddick D” by any means.
However, word on the street is that activists in her district are unhappy with Olivo’s votes on stem cell research and abortion issues. Olivo is Catholic and, like many Catholic Democrats in the Texas Legislature, the only time she doesn’t vote with the party is on these two issues, which is perfectly understandable.
So, Ron Reynolds, an attorney, has been encouraged to run against Olivo in the primary. On his Website, Reynolds claims he is the, “Responsive” and “Reliable” candidate for Texas House. A nice campaign slogan to be sure. The problem? Reynolds is evidently anything but “responsive” and “reliable” according to his record with the State Bar of Texas.
According to the State Bar of Texas, Reynolds has been suspended (via partially probated suspensions) from the practice of law twice and remains on probation until June of 2009.
In one instance, Reynolds settled a personal injury case without his client’s knowledge:
--------
Note: Interesting anyone would complain about hired workers given on the CFRs for Reynolds you see several hired campaign firms who use hired workers. Now just the other day I volunteered with a large group of real volunteers that block-walked for Olivo and several other candidates and we did it for free.
Oh and speaking of the developer's best friend...
If you go and look for bills Dora actually authored, about the only one you can find is the companion to Kyle Janek's state senate bill. Dora's legislation granted special taxing district status to Republican Charlie Howard's old developer running buddy, to use to develop the Booth Ranch along the river near Thompsons. Where the Republicans on commissioners' court are planning to foist a new bridge across the Brazos on us taxpayers.
Way to support the little people, Dora!
Tired Antics!
I believe this is the best advice I've seen given for any campaign,
"“But I really don’t want this to become an issue in these final 48 hours,” he said. “Let them battle it out and let the voter decide who to support. I will work with either of them.”
It would also be nice to see an article on the "supporters" Reynolds is claiming. I've seen a few I know that are NOT supporting him on his website.
Last minute antics and tired old ones too.
Here's a good one I missed in the other thread!
Ron Reynolds committed these rule violations against his clients, what would he do as a State Representatie representing YOU?
Read this article: http://www.fortbendnow.com/2010/02/17/44040
From H0205I9586, Page 2 from these documents:
http://neighborhood-media.com/pdf/Document.pdf
RULE VIOLATIONS
The acts and/or omissions of Respondent described above constitute conduct in violation of the following Rules of the TEXAS DISCIPLINARY RULES OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT:
• 1.01(B)(2) [in respresenting a client, frequently failing to carry out completely the obligations owed to a client or clients];
• 1.03(a) failing to keep a client reasonably informed about the status of a matter and failing to promptly comply with reasonable requests for information];
• 1.03(b) [failing to explain a matter to the extent reasonably necessary to permit the client to make informed decisions regarding the representation]:
• 1.14(a) [failing to hold funds and other property belonging in whole or part to clients or third persons in a lawyer’s possession separate from the lawyer’s own property];
• 1.14(b) [upon receiving funds or other property in which a client or third person has an interest, failing to promptly notify the client or third person]; and
• 8.04(a)(3) [engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation].
….and that is just ONE the FOUR cases that cost Reynolds his license for 15 months and 2 overlapping probations completed June 30,2009.
Ron Reynolds has proven that he cannot be trusted to properly represent any citizen as a State Representative.
Good luck Dora Olivo.

Dora Olivo Is At Least Responsible
The guy challenging Dora Olivo isn't all he's cracked up to be, according to a post at Capitol Annex.

A nice campaign slogan to be sure. The problem? Reynolds is evidently anything but “responsive” and “reliable” according to his record with the State Bar of Texas.

In another instance, Reynolds neglected matters for three clients
I tend to agree with Vince at CA. I disagree with Rep. Olivo on a couple of issues, but frankly, she's with me on everything else I fight for and believe in. In fact, she has fought for the empowerment of those who have been left ignored for a long time. Another fact is that she's been on the front lines defending those under attack by Republicans. She comes from that school that many of those before me learned from. The same school that produced other leaders, such as Willie Velasquez.
We need Rep. Olivo at the Texas Lege. She has earned it. She is not a Craddick "D", and she is a fighter for what's right. And she's going to need your help, too.
