Meadows Place plans to evaluate the future of garage sales in the city.
A public hearing will be held in January to discuss the matter, Mayor Charles Jessup said. Currently, garage sales are allowed in the city on six days of the year.
A resident is allowed to have a garage sale on no more than two of those days. Garages sales are a contentious issue in Meadows Place, he said.
“We’ve had a lot of folks screaming at us to shut them down and get them out of the city,” Jessup said. “We’ve had just about the same amount of folks screaming that say, ‘Hey, we want more.’”
He said three options will be considered for the future of garage sales. They are:
1. Keep the city’s current garage sales rules intact.
2. Reduce the garage sale dates to four per year, but allow residents to participate in all.
3. Completely eliminate garage sales.
If Jessup had his preference, he said he would eliminate garage sales. Six years ago, the city considered doing just that, he said.
“The halls were filled with everybody wanting to shut it down,” Jessup said. “We were going to pass a resolution to do it, but the next time we had a full house of everybody wanting more. The city seemed to me to be 40 percent want them, 40 percent don’t and 20 percent could care less either way.”
The public hearing is meant to get input from residents on the issue, Jessup said.
“We want to know what people’s feeling are right now,” he said. “It gives people an opportunity to voice their opinion or objection either way. It’s time to revisit the issue.”
