Meadows Place residents will have higher city tax bills.
During its meeting Wednesday night, City Council approved raising the city’s property tax rate by four cents to 83 cents per $100 valuation, Mayor Charles Jessup said. The rate had been 79 cents.
City Council also approved the city’s 2009-10 budget of $5.18 million.
It was forced to raise the city’s property tax rate because of sagging commercial values and an anticipated lower-than-normal collection rate of city property taxes, Jessup said.
“We hate it,” he said.
Jessup said he sympathizes with those residents upset by the city’s tax increase.
“I don’t blame them,” he said. “I really don’t. It’s a tough pill to swallow.”

Scaling government instead?

Instead of sympathy and platitudes lets see a responsible city government that lives within its means. Plan for down economies by scaling back city government to operate with surpluses, rather than long-term debt and deficits. You prepare for the bad times before they hit Jessup.
