Street parking is a no-no at the Cunningham Creek ballfield. Richard Zagrzecki photoIt's been two and a half years now since Precinct 4 Constable Troy Nehls wrote a letter to the parents of West Sugar Land Little League players warning that parking violations were going to be enforced at the ballfields.
Since that time, Nehls said, it appears the situation has been fully resolved.
The problems were occuring at two areas: on the street adjacent to the Cunningham Creek ballfield, and the levy area at the sports complex.
At Cunningham Creek, a lack of enough parking spots in the parking lot often led to parents parking on the street next to the field, despite no parking signs.
At the sports complex, parents would often drive onto the levy area straight off the Grand Parkway.
"Please be advised my office has received several requests for enforcement from NTRCA of the `No Parking' zone along Cunningham Creek," Nehls wrote in the letter, which is still posted on the WSLLL Web site. "In addition, the Levee Improvement District has also formally requested we monitor the area behind the ball fields on the Grand Parkway near New Territory Blvd. Therefore, my deputies will be issuing citations for violations in these areas. Please understand it is not legal to exit Grand Parkway into the grass; you will need to park off of New Territory Blvd."
Off of Cunningham Creek, a parking area has since been established in a grassy area behind the ballfields, which has taken away some of the temptation of parking on the street.
"We don't find that many people now parking along the street," Nehls said. "That new parking area has really alleviated a lot of the problems we had."
It's also now difficult for people to park on or around the levy at at the sports complex, which has a number of ballfields, because of fencing that has gone up.
"Really, we don't have too many problems right now," he said.
It's been "quite some time" since his deputy constables have issued any citations for parking along Cunningham Creek.
"We usually can just drive by and someone will see the officer and then the next thing you know, you see someone leave the bleachers and jump in their vehicle and move it," he said.

Paying twice for law enforcement?
I guess I will never understand why we have to pay the sheriff's office or the constables twice for these security contracts to enforce standing law? Could someone please explain how this is all tracked and whether or not we are getting the shaft over these "security" contracts?
